       The "G" Litter

The "G" Litter arrived on Thursday, April 23, 2026. There was one female puppy and two males.   The puppies are doing well, having found the mother and how to latch to feed.  Last night, we put them on a heating pad because our nights are cooler here in the Upcountry.

The pups are collared with green, orange, and yellow whelping collars so we can tell them apart.  The yellow collared pup is the female.  At the moment, she is "lunching" under Gussie's leg.  The boys are "dining" more toward Gussie's front, so they both are more visible.

   The pups at one week

The three puppies are all doing well.  They each have gained weight and size since last Thursday, when they were born.  Yellow is the girl, and Orange and Green are the boys.

One of the pups, I think it was Orange, was already trying to get his body off the blanket and was working on the fundamentals of walking.  Very impressive.  They know Mom is the Fountain of Everything, and can find her easily at any time.  I haven't seen them rooting around on the wrong side of her much.  When they are done nursing, they settle in for a good nap, making little contented sounds, which makes a sweet little harmony.  Since they are blind and deaf at this time of development, I wonder if this is how they tell their siblings, "Here I am, we're good, now let's take a nap!"

Already, they are changing.  I see their noses getting longer. Next week, their eyes will open.  Stay tuned!

   The pups at two weeks

We weighed the puppies today and they have all gained.  Green was first and weighed 2 lbs. 15 oz., Yellow came in at 3 lbs. even, and Orange weighed in at 3 lbs. 5 oz.

In addition, their eyes have opened.  Yellow was first in the morning and the boys had their opened by mid-afternoon.

Because their heads are no longer bullet shaped, we put ric-rac puppy collars on them today, keeping to the same color scheme we started with.  Over the next few days, we will see if the collars stay on.  It helps us identify and talk about them more easily.

We have been pretty impressed with their early development on many fronts.  They seem to have a good sense of how they want to walk.  Almost skipping the crawling on the belly phase.

There are a lot of puppy noises coming from the whelping box.  Some little chuffing noises, some short cries, some real barks.

Gussie is letting Falko come around more to help with the puppy cleaning up.  She is also letting our grandson get in the whelping box.

   The pups at three weeks

The pups turned 3 weeks old on the 14th of May.  This crew is thriving, walking instead of crawling, friendly and confident -- coming over to the grandson looking for attention.  They sleep a lot, eat a lot, and grow a lot.  All is well...

   The pups at four weeks

The pups turned 4 weeks old today, the 21st of May.  The puppies have been at the cutout at the front of the whelping box for several days, looking for attention and adventure.  So, today we brought them outside, where each one was given a chance to eat a little canned dog food.  Gia, the female, went right over to a plate and began eating as fast as she could.  The boys didn't have a clue until one wandered over and saw her devouring the food.  The second pup finally got into it just before the food was all gone.  Once back in the whelping box, they settled immediately into a good, long nap.  Fresh air, awesome grass, food in the belly -- who could ask for anything more?
